The ATOMIC CLOCK RADIO and its History

The idea of the ATOMIC CLOCK RADIO has been around since the mid 1950’s but wasn’t originally thought of for civilian use. It was originally a way for the military to synchronize all of its clocks to an infallible source. Despite what the name implies it is not powered by plutonium or anything radioactive at all. The atomic part of it refers to the method for keeping accurate time.

An ATOMIC CLOCK RADIO keeps its time by using an Atomic Resonance Frequency Standard. This is the most accurate standard to date for keeping time and is now used worldwide. The idea for using this method in order to measure time was first suggested in the late 1800’s. The technology to allow this theory to be put into practice was developed in the 1930’s and the first atomic clock was made in 1949.

However this was an early test model and wasn’t as accurate as quartz clocks of the time. But this first model served as the building block for the advances to come. Today our clocks have many more features than they did back in the 1950’s. The first notable difference is that most of them now use digital displays.

While an ATOMIC CLOCK RADIO can use both old fashioned hands and a digital display to show the time neither has an advantage over the other now. It is purely an aesthetic appeal and does not impact the performance of your unit. The alarm that is standard on all clocks has gone through some changes as well. A few clock radios may have old fashioned bell alarms installed in them but most use a speaker.

This speaker is tied into the ATOMIC CLOCK RADIO and is the same speaker that you listen to music on. You can either set it to play the sound of a bell, or turn on your favorite radio station at the appropriate time. In recent years radios have started to evolve farther than this. Some of them are built into other appliances in order to save on space and promote multiple functions.

Atomic clocks are also the foundation of GPS technology and without them the systems would not function. They are also integral to almost any part of our society that requires exact timing and regulation. Satellite based systems make the heaviest use of this due to the fact that their transmissions have to be timed perfectly. Of course if you want to look at something more down to earth you can examine factories and utility services.

Clocks have been a part of human history for a very long time. We depend on them now more than ever to help organize the chaos of our daily lives. Even though the technology may have changed the idea is still the same. As technology increases they will continue to get smaller, and able to handle even more functions.

So if you’re wondering how important your ATOMIC CLOCK RADIO is think of this. Without them people wouldn’t be getting out of bed for work, satellites wouldn’t function on time, and many of our systems would be less efficient. All of this was the result of simply wanting a faster accurate way to tell time.

Atomic clocks are one of the most reliable time keeping devices today. This is accomplished by analyzing radio waves sent by the cesium atomic clock from the American National Institute of Standards in Fort Collins, Colorado, ensuring that your time is 100% accurate. Atomic clocks will also reset it for time-savings ensuring the accurate time remains.

As atomic clocks do run off of radio waves in Fort Collins, sometimes the waves me endure interferences such as large buildings with a significant amount of steel and limited windows. This may slow down the synchronization process; however the clock will still remain fully functional.

Another thing to consider before purchasing an atomic clock is that the clock will not receive the synchronization waves outside of the United States. This means that the clock will still be fully functional, however will not be syncing up to the exact time.

Clocks247.com offers a large variety of Atomic clocks from traditional wooden mantel clocks to high tech atomic clocks which are able to tell the temperature, days of the week, month, and multiple time-zones.

In traditional clocks they rely on the balance wheel and hairspring of the clockwork watch, however with atomic clocks they rely on frequencies within the atom which are determined by the mass of nucleus and gravity electrostatic “springs” between the positive charge on the nucleus and the electron cloud which surrounds it. This method of time tracking keeps your atomic clock in sync at all times.

With an atomic clock there is no need to worry about power outages, time zones, or batteries going old which allows you to be assured that you always know the exact time.

There are several different types of atomic clocks. These types of atomic clocks are categorized by the element used to detect when the energy level changes within the radio waves. Cesium atomic clocks are able to analyze the radio waves by employing a beam of cesium atoms. The clock is designed to separate cesium atoms according to the different energy levels. This is accomplished through a magnetic field.

Hydrogen atomic clocks however maintain hydrogen atoms. These atoms require the energy level in a special container with walls and specific materials. This hand crafter container is designed so that the atoms don’t lose the higher energy states too quickly.

Rubidium atomic clocks are known as the simplest and most compact of all of the atomic clocks. This design uses a glass cell containing rubidium gas. The gas changes its absorption of light according to the microwave frequencies.

The cesium atomic clock is considered the most accurate atomic clock. These clocks utilize the cesium atoms in combination with normal magnetic fields and detectors. The cesium atoms are stopped from moving back and forth by laser beams, which in return reduces the small changes in frequencies due to the Doppler Effect.

I bought one of those atomic clocks when I was training to deploy with my unit in Fort Hood. When I got to Iraq, it didn’t work. I think its because there isn’t a relay station transmitting the signal there. So odds are, it won’t work in India unless they have a station that is transmitting in your area. However, the clock will keep time, it just won’t set itself.

I’ve heard this term in connection with atomic clocks. Does it refer to the movement of an electron around the nucleus of an atom ?

When a person speaks about the "beat" of an atom, they are talking about something called atomic resonance.

Basically, an atom can be considered to be an oscillator, like a swinging pendulum or a mass hanging on a spring. The atom "beats" a set number of times every second.

The atoms of each element resonate with a regular and characteristic frequency. You can set your watch by it, hence atomic clocks.

The cause of beat is actually the jumping of excited electrons between energy levels (you may have heard them called shells) around the nucleus, taking in or emitting radiation as they do so.

Hiya.
The clock should set itself. You might need to remove the batteries for a while before reinserting them, so that any current is fully discharged.
If the clock doesnt set itself, try moving it to another area.
Some clocks have 2 metal pins on the back, this is a reset feature and you can activate it by connecting them with something metalic such as a paperclip or the end of a spoon.
Other clocks such as digital clocks you may have to press and hold down the buttons to reset it.

Consult your manual or obtain one off the internet if you have lost it, but its usualy one of the simple fixes i described above.

There are probably some free schematics for clocks out there on the internet too if you are an experienced kit builder.

What is the most accurate clock or timepiece in the world and what makes it so accurate?

The most accurate clock in the world, as of January 2007, is the atomic clock CS2 at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), in Braunschweig, Germany. It has an error of plus or minus 1.1 nanoseconds. (Their web site say they do better than this, but that’s only after the clock time is "corrected".)

The United States Naval Observatory (USNO) in Washington D.C., was #2 for January; their clock error was plus or minus 1.5 nanoseconds.

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in Boulder Colorado, was #7 in the world, errors of plus or minus 4.8 nanoseconds.

But … every month, this changes. Perhaps the NIST clock is the most accurate this month.

Atomic cesium clocks are accurate because cesium has a very precise vibration frequency. Also, these clocks are made and operated very carefully, so that anything that might disturb them is kept away.

Every month, clocks from 56 locations around the world are compared and an average is calculated. This average is the official time. Unfortuantly, this official time is known only after the month is over! But scientists can also figure out the error in each clock, so they can say (a month late), that when the USNO clock said January 21, 4:15:00, it was really that time plus 5 nanoseconds (as an example).

The stuff that Marine52 says, about the NIST-F1 clock, is true if you average the clock errors over a long time. But if you take just single readings of the time, they were off by plus or minus 4.8 nanoseconds during January, about 68% of the time. He forgot to include the link, I put it in the list below.
